Matchem Racing targeted another potential star when Cambridge Lady sold for $70,000 at the 2015 Gold Coast Magic Millions.
A Mossman filly with the x-factor, she will be groomed for better races following a soft win on debut in the Ivan’s Pies Plate (1000m) at Cranbourne on Thursday. “Super-impressive, tested winner,” Matchem spokesman Suman Hedge tweeted. “Gun trainer, gun rating, gun result!”
Matchem Racing struck gold first-up at the 2014 Inglis Melbourne Premier with G2 Blue Diamond Prelude winner Fontiton. Its selection process includes heart-scores, DNA tests and the experienced eye of a Group 1 trainer like Mick Price.
Cambridge Lady (2f Mossman – Cambridge by Redoute’s Choice) is prepared by Price for long-time clients Rob and June Harding. “She was off the bridle and struggling to stay in touch early on,” stable apprentice Michael Dee said. “I felt her pick-up when I angled into clear running and she really attacked the line.
“She got through the Heavy 8 and the boss will probably step her up to 1200m.”
Mossman was Australia’s Champion 2YO Sire in 2013-14 and he’s finishing off another very successful season in the juvenile division with three stakes winners – Crack Me Up (LR Dalrello Stakes), Morvada (LR Oaklands Plate) & Cellarman (LR Wintergarden Stakes).
That’s only been bettered by Hinchinbrook in 2015-16.
His next 2yo debutante is Mosstiara in Race 3 at Kembla Grange on Saturday. She’s a homebred for Perth owners Lex and Shirley Piper and is a half-sister to their speed-machine Kencella.
Vinery stands Mossman for a $16,500 (inc gst) service fee.
