A half-brother to Group I winner Pressday, the Chris Waller trained Hinchinbrook colt Press Statement kept his unbeaten record intact with another stylish victory at Rosehill on Saturday.

An easy debut winner at Canterbury on April 29, Press Statement (pictured Steve Hart) was having his second start in the 1350 metre open juvenile and was the popular pick with punters,

He found the front for Jim Cassidy and travelled smoothly in the lead before fighting off a determined bid from Godolphin runner Shards to win by half a length with four lengths back to the third horse.

“We didn’t want to lead but I just wanted to take a few of the minuses out of the equation early, put him on the fence and let him have a nice easy cruise around,” Cassidy said.

“He was too good for them.

“He’s a big baby, still growing into himself and what he’s doing at the moment is a bonus.

“Chris (Waller) can make these two-year-olds that probably shouldn’t be doing what he’s doing, he’s doing it on raw ability and obviously being trained right.”

Press Statement is entered for the Group I BRC JJ Atkins Classic over 1600 metres in Brisbane next Saturday for which he is favourite, but Waller’s racing manager Liam Prior refused to commit completely to a trip north next week until the horse pulls up from today.

“I’m probably not on enough money to make that decision,” he said. “It’s a pretty big call but it’s a Group I race.

“He’s a horse we’ve always had a good opinion of and obviously he’s a colt so it would certainly play to his potential value if he was to go up there and win the race but that’s for the boss to consider with the owners.”

A homebred for stable client Tony Muollo, who also bred and raced Group I winner Hawkspur, Press Statement is a half-brother to the former very good Chris Waller trained juvenile Pressday, who won the Group I BRC TJ Smith Classic (now the JJ Atkins).

With two wins from two starts, Press Statement has already won over $100,000 in prizemoney and is the fourth winner for Kaaptive Empress, a half-sister to the dam of Group I winner The Mighty Lions, dam of Group III winner Vaquera.

Kaaptive Empress has a weanling filly by Street Cry (IRE) that was withdrawn from the 2015 Inglis Australian Select Weanling Sale, which might be good move if her brother delivers on the potential he is showing!

Kaaptive Empress was covered again last spring by Snitzel’s three-quarter brother Hinchinbrook, who has six winners on the board this season including the stakes-winner Flippant.

The blue-blooded son of Fastnet Rock stands at Yarraman Park at a fee of $16,500.
