Morvada staked his claim for the classics with an outstanding three-length victory in the LR Oaklands Plate (1600m) at Morphettville Saturday.
The Mossman youngster was stretching out to a mile for the first time and gave his rivals windburn when Jake Toeroek went for home in the straight. “He’s a real tough horse for a two-year-old and I think he will measure up in the spring,” trainer Peter Jolly said. “The Mossmans get better with age.
“He will go the paddock now and we will look at the Victoria Derby.”
Morvada started an even-money favourite after a last-start placing in the G3 SA Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m). “He’s been a handful and ironed out Jake at his first start,” Jolly said. “Then he knocked me unconscious and I was in hospital for a week. But he’s not a nasty horse, just very athletic and full of himself.”
A $200,000 purchase from Vinery Stud at the 2015 Inglis Easter Yearling sale, Morvada is a half-brother to last-start Doomben winner Gotyacovered (Wonderful World) and Mini (Reset) who has been catalogued as Lot 1245 at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale on June 5.
Their NZ bred dam Carnegie Minstrel (Carnegie) has a colt on the ground by Myboycharlie and was bred back to Mossman last spring. She is a half-sister to Kiwi stakes winner Scarlet Vanhara (Van Nistelrooy) and the immediately family also includes Group 1 winner Zonda (Zabeel).
Morvada is the 34th stakes-winner for Mossman who stands for a $16,500 (inc gst) fee at Vinery.
