On Friday Big Brown’s 10 runner’s had made 13 starts, recording 5 wins (1 Stakes), 1 second, 1 third, and earnings of $136,789. On Saturday, new 2yo winner Insolvent improved that record.
Vinery’s Kentucky Derby victor & 4-time Gr1-winning shuttler Big Brown (Boundary-Mien, by Nureyev) sired his 5th winner when first crop juvenile Insolvent (Big Brown-Refrain, by Unbridled’s Song) lead all the way in an 1100m 2YO Fillies’ Maiden at Saratoga.
Originally scheduled to race on the turf track but switched to dirt after heavy rain, this was Insolvent second start following a debut placing when favourite at Monmouth Park last month. She was favorite in that race on the dirt and went to the front, but tired late and finished third.
The Big Brown filly made up for that debut 3rd placing by making every post a winner to score by 1.75-lengths for trainer Pompay Teresa over fellow fillies Elusive Fate (Elusive Quality) & Girl Code (Tueflesberg)
The grey filly, who showed sharp debut speed at the Jersey Shore before weakening, won the break here and streaked through an opening couple of furlongs in :21.91 and then :45.90.
Insolvent had as many as seven lengths on her rivals on the turn, but the sloppy underfoot conditions began to exact their toll and her lead was reduced to three lengths at the furlong. Insolvent kept finding the straight despite her slick start and was never threatened winning comfortably by almost two lengths.
Insolvent was a US$105,000 2YO at the 2012 Ocala Breeders Sales April Sale and is out of the winning mare Refrain.
Refrain has produced 2 winners, both of which won on the turf, including turf stakes winner Girlfrienontheside. Girlfriendontheside earned $128,490 and was also winner at 2.
