TOUGH as teak gelding Mossamine helped cap off an unforgettable day for his sire Mossman when he took out the aptly named Mossman@Vinery Handicap (1550m) at Canterbury.
Apart from that incredible coincidence, Mossman was in the headlines for a more important reason, two of them in fact, as top flight sprinter Buffering strolled home to win the Victory Stakes Gr.2 for the second successive year and Second Effort became Mossman’s 20th individual stakeswinner when he bagged the time honoured Wangoom Handicap (1200m) in a driving finish.
“It’s been a great day for Mossman,” says Vinery’s Adam White ,”a 3-State treble is one thing but two of those were stakes races so we’re thrilled.”
“He’s just such a great sire of tough and sound horses with more than few really top shelf horses like Ofcourseican, Buffering and Love Conquers All to name a few.”
The Clinton McDonald trained Second Effort may not have had the luxury of Buffering’s 7-lens winning margin but the result was the same in this afternoon’s time honoured Wangoom Handicap on day one at the ‘Bool.
Today’s triumph was Second Effort’s eighth win at start number 19 and his first at stakes level.
As a result, the Victorian gelding becomes his Mossman’s 20th individual stakeswinner capping a brilliant year.
“Mossman has had a great autumn period with Ofcourseican getting that well earned Group 1 win in the Coolmore Classic,” says White.
“Second Effort really deserved that win. He’s been Stakes Placed already in this preparation but stepped up again today following his last start Caulfield win. He’s been so consistent over a long period.”
Meanwhile Buffering looks ominous for the Brisbane carnival having won by 7 lengths today and been Gr.1 placed in his previous 4 starts.”
It was the perfect start to the son of Mossman’s winter campaign which will take in races like the BTC Cup, Doomben 10,000 and Stradbroke Handicap.
