THE increasingly likelihood of a dead track should see a much improved performance by classy Victorian miler Speediness who lines-up in the Group 3 ATC Doncaster Prelude (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday.
The son of Testa Rossa ran below his best in the Group 2 ATC Ajax Stakes (1500m), his wide barrier coupled with a firm track may have been his undoing.
“Speediness has won on a good track but three of his four wins have been on dead or slow going so it’s possible that he prefers some give in the ground,” Vinery’s Conor Phelan said.
“There was some pretty heavy rain that fell at Randwick last night and the track was downgraded from a Dead (4) to a Dead (5) as a result. That’s getting to the range where Speediness could really appreciate.”
Speediness certainly has the class required to win a race of this kind, he was runner-up in the Hawkesbury Guineas and behind Sincero in the 1600m Scone Guineas.
The Colin Scott trained gelding finished fourth in the Group 2 VRC Blamey Stakes (1600m) two starts back.
