MORE Than Ready son Benicio was responsible for his second impressive first-crop winner inside a week when emerging stayer Slippery Satin scored an easy 2.8-lens win over 1600m at Seymour this afternoon.
The Mick Price trained 3YO has been a model of consistency finishing third at her previous two starts before Saturday’s comfortable victory over the mile.
Slippery Satin is raced in partnership by Vinery Stud and is out of the Dr Grace mare, Satin Covers, whose earlier foals include the stakeswinning Gawne.
Grand-dam Stain Sand was a classy sprinter in her day winning the Group 1 STC Orlando Classic (aka the Coolmore Classic) as well as the Liverpool City Cup and Silver Shadow Stakes.
“Slippery Satin is by a VRC Derby winner out of a mare whose sire won the AJC Derby so there is plenty to suggest that the filly is only going to get better as her gets out over some ground,” Vinery’s Conor Phelan said, “this was her first start beyond 1500 and as we’ve seen time and time again, the Benicio’s appreciate getting over ground, they just get better.”
“She is only lightly-raced with the six starts to her name and now that she’s won a race, and won it so convincingly, she might just be one to keep going onwards and upwards.”
Slipper Satin’s win comes hot on the heels of Tasmanian resident Seeking Chi’s stylish win at Cranbourne on Wednesday while making her visit to the mainland.
“Benicio is having a particularly good trot at the moment, don’t forget that Cuban Sunday has raced so very well this campaign,” Phelan commented.
