GOLDEN Slipper winning training duo Matt Ellerton and Simon Zahra will seek to add this year’s Blue Diamond to their expanding trophy cabinet after a dogged win from their Testa Rossa colt Redangelo in today’s VRC Summer Heroes Raceday Plate (1200m) at Flemington.
It was a big day for Testa with Pane in the Glass keeping her unbeaten record intact in the $250,000 Inglis Classic.
Redangelo was having only his second race start following an eventful third at Caulfield on debut when he was slow to begin and struck interference at the furlong marker.
His winning effort was is sure to his Blue Diamond quote dip dramatically when betting re-opens tomorrow.
Co-trainer Zahra said Redangelo was not a natural two-year-old but would be given his chance to reach the million dollar feature run at Caulfield on February 26.
”We are not going to bustle him to get there,” Zahra said.
”We will see how he pulls up and gradually go forward with him, but he is going to be a much better horse later on.
”He is a tough, nuggetty sort of horse and when he fills out as a three-year-old you will see a really, really nice horse.”
Redangleo was bred by Segenhoe Stud and was sold for $180,000 at the 2010 Australian Easter Yearling Sale to Ellerton/Zahra Racing.
The colt’s dam, Angel of the South, is from a half-sister to Red Rason’s Group One winning son, Charge Forward.
Redangelo’s win preceded a dazzling win in $250,000 Inglis Classic (1200m) at Rosehill by Testa Rossa filly Pane In The Glass who remains unbeaten in her three career starts and will now take aim the Blue Diamond Stakes.
Meanwhile, the Chris Waller trained mare, Platinum Red, capped of a memorable day for Testa Rossa when she scored at Newcastle.
Her win was all the more poignant given that she is part owned by Vinery Stud.
