MORE Than Ready mare Hungry Island swept away a quality field to win last weekend’s Grade 2 Lake Placid Stakes at Saratoga to record her fourth victory inside eight starts.
The Shug McGaughey trained mare settled last before switching to the outside at the top of the stretch reaching the lead inside the final furlong before surging clear to win by 2.5-lens.
Such was the strength of Hungry Island’s victory that she will now be aimed at the Grade 1 Garden City at Belmont park on September 18.
”She’s a good filly who has done everything we’ve wanted this year,” McGaughey said,”We skipped the Lake George because I didn’t want to rush her back off her last win at Belmont knowing we had this race, the Garden City and the Queen Elizabeth at Keeneland coming up. And if all goes well we might be able to make all three with her.”
Hungry Island, already a stakeswinner prior to her weekend triumph, is one of 88 black-type winners sired by More Than Ready around the globe.
