FORMER champion two-year-old and Danehill grandson Myboycharlie shapes as the “dark horse” among an especially strong array of freshman sires with yearlings headed to sales for the first time in 2012.

The Vinery Stud resident is one of 22 first season sires with progeny on the way to the Gold Coast for the Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

This year’s class includes winners of the Golden Slipper (Sebring), Epsom Derby (Authorized and New Approach), Blue Diamond (Reaan), French 2000 Guineas (Astronomer Royal), Irish 2000 Guineas (Henrythenavigator), Coolmore Stud (Northern Meteor), Dewhurst Stakes (Teofilo) and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (War Pass).

Myboycharlie is a Group 1-winning son of the ill-fated Danetime, from the family of acclaimed French import and blue-hen mare Snowdrift – dam of successful sires, Snowland and Snippetson.

The horse possessed uncommon speed and precocity, winning the Group 3 Angelesy Stakes in Ireland by seven lengths before taking out the prestigious Prix Morny at Deauville by two lengths.

As a result, Myboycharlie was crowned French Champion 2YO Colt for 2007.

Magic Millions managing director Vin Cox has seen a number of Myboycharlie’s foals and yearlings ahead of next month’s sale and reckons it’s a case of seen one, seem’em all.

“They are very much to type,” Cox said.

“And there’s not much difference between any of them. They are peas in a pod – each one looks like the next one.

“The Danehill influence is very significant and it comes out wherever it is – and it certainly has with this horse as well.”

Myboycharlie has a total of 13 yearlings representing him at the Gold Coast, three of which are part of Scone nursery Amarina Farm’s consignment.

Amarina Farm has already enjoyed considerable sale-ring success with the progeny of Myboycharlie, selling (first crop) weanlings for $50,000, $48,000 and $46,000 at the 2011 Magic Millions National sale.

“They are good, tough-looking horses,” Amarina Farm co-owner and stud manager Craig Anderson told Sportsman.

“Myboycharlie throws a consistent type of horse, predominately bay/browns.

“He has got a few greys but I’ve never seen a chestnut foal by him.”

Vinery Stud are taking two Myboycharlie fillies to the Magic Millions – Lot 617 (the half-sister to Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes winner, Sistine Angel) and Lot 731 (a daughter of multiple city winner Penny Opera, from the immediate family of Group 1 winners Vision And Power and Glamour Puss).

“Given Myboycharlie was such a speedy and precocious two-year-old, the Magic Millions is a great venue for his progeny to debut,” Vinery Stud’s Adam White said.

“Myboycharlie has the Danehill build strong and athletic – and you only have to look at these yearlings to see this is what he is reproducing.

“The half-sister to Sistine Angel has so much quality and what you would expect to see from a fast Danehill-line stallion.”
