Big Brown filly Muscovado took the first step towards the early-season features at the Randwick barrier trials on Friday whilst another couple of Big Brown’s opened their accounts in fine style in the U.S.

The Gai Waterhouse trained 2yo cruised home in a hit-out at her home track following a four month spell. “Nice win this morning,” part-owners John and David Henderson tweeted. “She looks to have returned in good order.”

Muscovado (2f Big Brown – On Type by Zeditave) did well enough on debut in the G3 Widden Stakes at Randwick earlier this year to earn a start in the G3 TBV Stakes at Flemington but over-raced on the pace and was never comfortable down the straight.

The Hendersons are part of a Star Thoroughbreds syndicate that bought Muscovado for $120,000 at the 2013 Gold Coast Magic Millions. She is a half-sister to G3 McNeil Stakes winner Sugar Babe and her yearling sister by Big Brown is with Liam Birchley.

Big Brown had a couple of runaway winners in the USA on Saturday starting with Polyushko who bolted in on debut at Gulfstream Park.

Polyushko (2f Big Brown – Lily’s Joy by Malibu Moon) sat three-wide in the lead and drew off to score by 4 lengths over 1000m. She is the first foal from a winning daughter of G3 Aqueduct winner Bold Wench.

Big Brown colt For Goodness Sake scored by an even bigger margin when he had next to 7 lengths in reserve at Churchill Downs.

For Goodness Sake (3c Big Brown – Fifteenth East by Old Trieste) had won his maiden under the Twin Spires in May and doubled up with another dominant front-running victory over 1700m. He cost $150,0000 at the 2012 Keeneland September yearling sale and is from a half-sister to Aqueduct and Pimlico stakes winner True Direction (French Deputy).

Big Brown was a Group 1 winner of the Kentucky Derby and his first southern crop are getting ready for the three year-old classics. His NZ colt Southern Icon is being set for the G1 Caulfield Guineas and his Rosehill winner Bomber Brown will target the G1 Victoria Derby.

Vinery will stand Big Brown (USA) for a $16,500 (inc gst) fee this year.
