LONG time Randwick trackman Craig ‘Clocker’ Tompson is wavering in his belief that Golden Slipper winner Pierro can beat her famous stablemate More Joyous in what shapes as an epic clash in tomorrow’s Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill.

Tompson has kept a close watch on the star studded pair in the countdown to arguably the most anticipated race in Sydney for decades.

“Earlier in the week I was reasonably confident Pierro would prevail but having seen so much of More Joyous over the years, and seeing the way she went about her business on Thursday, I’m nowhere near as confident now,” Tompson wrote in today’s Weekend Sportsman.

“More Joyous has been building into this prep every bit as well as any previous campaign and on Thursday morning looked particularly good working over an easy 1200m in 1:21.2, last 600m in 37.5 and a final 200m under a tight hold in 11.9 seconds.”

More Joyous is aiming to become the first horse to win three Canterbury Stakes (1200m) having won the race first-up for the past two years.
