MORE Than Ready’s has enhanced his reputation as a ‘classic sire’ in the wake of Australian-bred Sakima’s five length win in the Listed Perak Derby (2400m) in Malaysia on the weekend.
More Than Ready has been crowned Champion Sire of 2YO’s in Australia (twice) and the USA but there has always been a classic bent in the Vinery captain’s resume.
”Not everyone would be aware that More Than Ready’s first ever foal on the ground in Australia was Benicio who won the VRC Derby,” Vinery’s Conor Phelan said.
”After that he sired horses like Ready To Lift who won a group race over 2400m and now we are seeing a number of three-year-old classic types like Champion W.A filly Dreamaway.”
The Bob Peters owned/bred Dreamaway ranks as one of the most promising fillies to have come out of the west in decades having won the rare WATC Oaks/Derby double during the autumn.
As for Sakima, he is a chestnut gelding out of Quadrophonic Sound, an Ideal Planet half-sister to Group 1 duo Assertive Lad and Assertive Lass (dam of the unbeaten Reset).
Trained by Johnny Lim for Lion Head Stable, Sakima cost A$67,500 as a yearling.
It was success at his third attempt at a Malaysian Group 1 event for Sakima in the RM500,000 Perak Derby. It was a great result for the Australian five-year-old who had just six starts in 2009 for two wins and four placings, and a further five outings last year for two wins.
Sakima is the 84th individual Stakes winner for More Than Ready who enjoyed a successful Autumn with More Joyous, Elite Falls, Dreamaway et al all saluting at Group Level for the leading sire.
