HUSSON added another string to his bow when Lucky Hussler sprinted away with the Moonga Stakes (1400m).
Trainer Darren Weir told the Herald Sun that Lucky Hussler would join his stablemate Trust In A Gust in being set for that $1 million race over 1600m at Flemington on November 8.
Weir has history on his side as last year Boban won at Caulfield before winning the Emirates Stakes.
Weir said a decision to put blinkers on Lucky Hussler and also ride him quietly led to his improved performance.
“The horse has been racing really well. Last start, when he got to the front, he looked like he needed blinkers and we obviously have put them on at the right time and got the right result,” Weir said.
“I reckon he deserves a shot at The Emirates as he’ll get in well on the weights.”
Lucky Hussler was ridden by Glen Boss, who said he learnt a lot from riding him at Flemington at his previous start.
“Blinkers and ridden cold made the difference. He was explosive. That was impressive as he’s gone up in grade,” Boss said.
The win gave Weir the second leg of a winning double at Caulfield, as he also won earlier with Stratum Star.
Lucky Hussler ($10) defeated Under The Louvre ($7) by three-and-a-quarter lengths with Generalife ($7) a length away third.
Leebaz had little luck and his jockey Dwayne Dunn said he performed well but had nowhere to go.
