Trainer Ciaran Maher set Jameka specifically for Saturday’s Group 1 BMW and she made sure the result was never in doubt at Rosehill.
The Myboycharlie mare tracked the speed on a Heavy 9 surface and then dropped the field for a dominant 6 length victory over Humidor (NZ) and Exospheric (GB).
It made amends for her unlucky last-start loss when narrowly beaten by Humidor in the G1 Australian Cup at Flemington. “That was a super effort,” Maher said. “It was her target race and I’m just rapt to get it done.”
The BMW was Jameka’s third win at the elite level following the G1 VRC Oaks and G1 Caulfield Cup. She has earned over $4.87 million and a possible clash with Winx awaits in the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick on April 8.
“I will see how she pulls up before talking to the owners about how the next six months plays out,” Maher added. “There’s the Queen Elizabeth, Hong Kong and Royal Ascot. She’s such a quality mare and we’re going to take on the best.”
Jameka is by Vinery sire Myboycharlie and was bred by Gilgai Farm owner Rick Jamieson from Mine Game (General Nediym). Maher bought her for $130,000 at the 2014 Inglis Melbourne Premier yearling sale.
Winning jockey Hugh Bowman said Jameka made his job easy. “You had to see it to believe her run in the Australian Cup,” he explained. “I was on the supreme horse in the race today and I let her guide me. I just had to stay close to the leader and keep her in rhythm.”
Myboycharlie warmed up for the weekend with Albury Guineas winner Siren’s Fury on Friday. The Jason Coyle-trained filly had won a Wyong maiden in February and finished midfield last time out in the Group 3 Kembla Grange Classic.
Siren’s Fury powered home from last to score by a short-neck running away at Albury. “It panned out how we expected,” Coyle said. “The tempo was really solid and it was a nice patient by Kathy (O’Hara) to catch them in the last furlong.”
Myboycharlie sired her from De Chorus (Unbridled Song) who was a Randwick winner for John O’Shea, Hugh Bowman and Torryburn Stud owner John Cornish.
Vinery has catalogued a Myboycharlie colt from Carnegie Minstrel as Lot 406 for the Inglis Easter yearling sale on Thursday, April 6. He’s a half-brother to Morvada (Mossman) who is being set for the Group 1 South Australian Derby on May 13.
