UP-AND-COMING three-yearold Greenedge is the latest in the growing number of promising horses by Vinery Stud resident sire Excites to emerge during their three-yearold season.
Greenedge is unbeaten in his two career starts, having strung together a pair of stylish wins in Victoria.
The Team Hawkes-trained galloper opened his account in impressive style with a half-length win at Ballarat on November 20 in the 1200m maiden. The gelding was given almost a month’s break before stepping out in a R0-68 Handicap at Kyneton over 1450m, racing on the pace before edging clear for his second straight win.
Greenedge was purchased by Hawkes Racing at the 2009 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale for $60,000 and races in the colours of Americain’s part-owner Gerry Ryan.
“We have been very patient with him so far, so we are certainly not in any rush with him,” co-trainer Wayne Hawkes told Sportsman.
Greenedge’s rise comes right in time for vendors, with an Excites yearling headed for either the Magic Millions or Inglis Classic Yearling sales in January 2012.
One of those vendors is Queensland institution Raheen Stud, who have two yearlings by the former Group 1-winning two-year-old on the way to the Magic Millions.
“The filly out of McFly is a lovely filly,” Raheen Stud’s Basil Nolan Jnr said. “She is a big, strong, powerful filly – and correct.
“The colt from Special Package is a real athletic type of horse as well, they are both really nice horses.”
Raheen Stud is a shareholder in Excites and have been good supporters of the stallion in his first few seasons at Vinery.
“He is a well-bred horse and was a good racehorse,” Nolan Jnr said. “His female line appealed to us. His dam Staging was such a strong racemare and she’s thrown a couple of Group 1 winners and a Group 1
placegetter.
“We sold two yearlings last year for decent sort of money, so Excites has been good to us so far.”
Excites is represented by 12 yearlings at the Inglis Classic, three of whom are being sold under the Vinery banner.
Lot 154 is a bay colt bred on the same Excites/Scenic cross as Greenedge, while Lot 448 is a bay/brown filly from the Denise’s Joy dynasty.
Vinery’s final Excites to be sold at the Classic is Lot 526, the half-brother to Group 2 MRC Autumn Classic and Listed VRC Fashion Stakes winner, Stokehouse.
