MELBOURNE Cup winning trainer Dermot Weld has unearthed a genuinely talented prospect by Vinery stud resident Myboycharlie in the shape of Glory Boy who posted an impressive win in Ireland overnight.
Myboycharlie is on a roll with first-crop winners in both hemispheres and the latest arrived in Ireland on Sunday.
The Vinery freshman has now sired 8 individual winners after Glory Boy claimed the Irish Stallion Farms Maiden (1400m) at Listowel.
Glory Boy (2g Myboycharlie – Spring Glory by Dr Fong) was given no room when placed on debut at Leopardstown in April but there were no traffic issues second-up. He powered home under Pat Smullen to score by a half a length from Ruler Of France (Holy Roman Emperor).
“He gave me a hard time early on as he was quite keen but he stuck at it well in testing conditions,” Smullen said at Listowel. “He was a shade unlucky at Leopardstown and having had a run is a huge help round here.”
Glory Boy was initially sold as a foal for 38,000 euros (AUD 50,610) at the 2011 Goffs November Sale. He was pin-hooked by Moat House Farm owners Mark and Pippa Hackett and they received a sizeable profit twelve months later when he made 145,000 euros (AUD 182,560) at the 2012 Goffs Yearling Sale
“We were absolutely thrilled with the result,” said Mark Hackett who is based at Tullamore in County Offaly. “Our son is named Charlie, so it was slightly coincidental that we bought this horse. He’s a gorgeous individual and a real powerhouse with a great step.”
Glory Boy’s dam Spring Glory was retired after winning a Lingfield maiden as a spring three year-old. She is a half-sister to LR Ballycullen Stakes winner On Call (Alleged) who has foaled G2 Santa Anita winner One Off (Barathea).
Myboycharlie (Ire) has already sired 5 winners in Australia & NZ including the stakes performers Charlestown and Charlie Boy. In the last month, he has added another 3 winners – Salai (France), Sprinting Queen (South Africa) and Glory Boy.
Dermot Weld has nominated Glory Boy for the G2 Railway Stakes at the Curragh on June 29. And Myboycharlie’s last-start Randwick winner Dowdstown Charlie has been quoted at $14 in pre-post markets for the G1 J J Atkins Stakes at Eagle Farm this Saturday.
Myboycharlie (Danetime) was a G1 winner of the 2007 Prix Morny and he shuttles to Vinery Stud from Haras du Mezeray in Normandy. He will stand for a $16,500 (inc gst) service fee this year.
