When your first starter is a winner, buyers take notice. Excites made a positive impression on buyers at the Magic Millions Yearling sale and will do so again at Inglis Classic this weekend.
Now with seven more of the Vinery Stud resident’s progeny about to go under the hammer at Inglis Classic Sale Newmarket from this Sunday, interest is certain to remain high.
“Three of the four Excites yearlings that went through the ring at the Gold Coast averaged a tick under $50k and were sold for $44,000, $40,000 and $65,000,” Vinery’s Conor Phelan said.
“They were three nice colts and a good advertisement for the stallion. The fourth just failed to meet its $70,000 reserve and with the owner’s retaining to race, they should have some real fun with it.”
Of course apart from being `good types’, the collective reputation Magic Millions trio was boosted in the lead-up to the sale by the fact that Excites’ first runner, Amber’s Crown’ was a brilliant debut winner on the Gold Coast.
“Excites’ only other first crop runner so far, Brett Thompson’s filly, Stirring Emotions, was third beaten less than a length on Monday at only her third race. The aptly named filly has placed twice in those three starts – so a win looks to be just around the corner,” Phelan said.
Excites’ get the chance to register his second winner (from what will be three starters) when the handsome colt Black Jag makes his debut at Eagle Farm tomorrow. The Peter Hulbert trained youngster signalled his intentions when finishing runner-up behind Stakes placed Queenslander, Wonderful You in a 900m barrier trial at Doomben last month.
One of Excites’ stand-out yearlings at the 2011 Inglis Classic is tipped as Lot 113, a powerfully built chestnut colt out of the Stakeswinning mare, Not Fussy.
The colt is being offered by Redbank North as agent for Jacob Park Thoroughbreds.
“He is bit pigeon-toed but other than that he is a nice horse,” says Redbank’s James Middleton.
“He is one of those horses that we have had no trouble at all with and everything has gone right throughout the whole preparation.
“He is a good boned horse and his temperament has been fantastic – he hasn’t missed a grain.”
Not Fussy was as tough as old boots winning 12 races from 52 starts highlighted by the 2005 STC Stayer’s Cup (2400m) at Rosehill.
“He is well bred horse,” said Middleton.
Meanwhile, Vinery Stud will present a quality Excites filly at the Classic Yearling Sale, Lot 349 is the first foal of Encosta de Lago mare, Adequate.
“She has a great pedigree,” Conor Phelan remarked.
Her second dam is by Snippets while her next one is a Bustino half-sister to Arctic Owl who won the Irish St Leger and a horse we know very well in Australia, Marooned.”
The filly was foaled on August 10 giving her an earlier birthday.
“She is a nice upstanding sort of filly as you would expect from such an early foal but there is a lot of scope about her, you only have to look at her pedigree to see that.”
The five remaining Excites; due to arrive at Newmarket include a close relation to Red Anchor (Lot 26), the half brother to $240,000 winner Mosso (Lot 52), a grand-son of Compulsion, dam of Brayroan and daughter of Bold Promise (Lot 188) as well as Lot 234, a son of 15-times winner/stakeswinner, Shepishir and Lot 276 – the half-sister to More Than Ready stakeswinner, Floramour.
