WARWICK Farm trainer Jason Coyle says up and coming stayer Scream Machine won’t have another run before he tackles the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) on June 9 at Eagle Farm.

The first crop son of Excites burst into classic contention with a come from behind win at Rosehill over 2000m beating Derby hopefuls Fortunefivehundred and Lucripetous.

The effort was enough to convince Coyle to chance his arm with the gelding in the $500,000 feature.

“If he had of got beaten last Saturday I probably wouldn’t have been disappointed but it would have left us thinking whether we stay in Sydney or we give him his chance up there,” Coyle told Sportsman.

“He’s jumped every hurdle we’ve put him in front of him and (the Derby) is obviously the next step.”

Scream Machine’s latest effort was a mini triumph for horse and trainer given that he lept to 2000m in town just seven days after being beaten in a 1400m Class 2 at Kembla.

“It gave me a lot of confidence watching him at Rosehill. Obviously we got all the favours – he drew well, he was ridden perfectly and he didn’t have to go around a horse,” Coyle said.

“He tended to want to overrace at Kembla but (jockey) Adam (Hyeronimus) got him to relax and if you can do that over these longer trips, it’s a great asset.”

Another positive indicator for Scream Machine’s Queensland Derby hopes is his pedigree.

The gelding is by Excites, whose own sire Danewin, was terribly unlucky not to have won the VRC Victoria and AJC Australian Derbies owing to pilot error.

Added to that Scream Machine’s dam, Sevilliano, is by Octagonal and boasts a 3 X 3 double cross of the immortal Sir Tristram.

“Even looking at the horse himself, he’s a big rangy sort who to my eye has that European build, so hopefully that’s another tick in the box,” Coyle added.

Should Scream Machine be able to secure next month’s Queensland Derby, he will grant his sire, Excites, a Group 1 winner from his first crop.

“I have a couple of Excites in the stable and I don’t mind the stallion, he’s going quite well,” says Coyle.

“I used to watch Excites race and I thought he was a super racehorse and his record didn’t indicate how good he was.

“And he was a stallion that I looked when I went to the sales because he was in my price rang bracket and I just thought that he was a stallion who was just a high quality racehorse in his day.”
