MOSSMAN gelding Buffering showed himself worthy of a start against unbeaten champion Black Caviar in the upcoming Group 1 MVRC Manikato Stakes (1200m) with a typically gritty win in the McEwen Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley last weekend.
The talented Queenslander burst back into the winners circle for the first time since taking the Group 2 BRC Victory Stakes (1200m) in Brisbane during the winter laying down the gauntlet to the world’s best sprinter.
Buffering showed his usual pace and speed to take up the running in Saturday’s WFA feature holding on for a dogged win ahead of 2010 Golden Slipper heroine Crytsal Lily and reigning Galaxy winner Atomic Force.
This was Buffering’s eighth win from 17 starts and takes his earnings close to $900,000, a tremendous return on his initial $22,000 yearling price.
“Mossman was a very game and genuine racehorse in his time and Buffering has all of his sire’s courage and determination,” says Vinery’s Conor Phelan.
“He was up and running right fom the get-go and has won stakes races in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne against the best around. He is a wonderful competitor and has been very well handled by his trainer Robert Heathcote.
“Black Caviar is Black Caviar but Buffering will give her something to chase. It promises to be a great race.”
