Tasmanian 2YO of the Year Admiral returned from a winter spell with an outstanding trial at Longford last week.
Leading jockey Brendon McCoull lost an iron leaving the barriers and the Mossman gelding was tailed off behind the second last horse before finishing powerfully in what was clearly the best trial of the day.
“That was unbelievable,” trainer Barry Campbell said. “Brendon didn’t really touch him.”
Campbell will look at the calendar before pin-pointing a launching pad for the Tasmanian summer carnival. The G1 Australian Guineas at Flemington has also been mentioned as a possible mainland mission in the autumn.
“He will get a mile easy,” Campbell claimed. “The best is yet to come from this bloke.”
Admiral will target the 3YO Cup (1200m) in Launceston on December 17. Other goals include the Tasmanian Guineas (1600m) at Elwick on January 11 and Thomas Lyons Stakes (1400m) at Elwick on February 9.
Admiral (3g Mossman – Reunification by West Quest) dominated the local juvenile scene last season winning 6 of his 7 starts including the LR Gold Sovereign Stakes, LR Elwick Stakes, Autumn 2YO Classic and Tasmanian Sires’ Produce Stakes.
The son of Vinery stallion Mossman is part-owned by breeder Bruno Calabro along with Ron and Trudy Schwanke and Denise Martin of Star Thoroughbreds. His dam Reunification won 12 races for Campbell and the late Dudley Clark.
