The winning strike-rates of Vinery Stud sires Star Turn (73%) and All Too Hard (69%) are among the best in the business and their stats for November continued to improve in Brisbane and Sydney on Wednesday.
Star Turn 3yo filly Lady Shotgun overcome a chequered passage to post her first win for part-owner and trainer Angela Plumb in the Sky Racing Hcp (1350m) at Doomben. After a slow getaway, stewards reported she was held up from the home turn to the 200m before accelerating through a gap for jockey Michael Cahill.
“She’s a pleasure to train and probably should a have won before now,” Plumb said. “She’s a lovely, tractable filly and that will give her confidence a boost going forward.”
Plumb and part-owner Peter Quinlan purchased Lady Shotgun for $36,000 from Baramul Stud at the 2022 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale. “She was a good buy at that price and can carry on and win lots more races.”
Lady Shotgun was the 10th individual winner by Star Turn this month and Plumb also prepares her older half-sister Shotgun Diva (All Too Hard) who won on the Gold Coast at the start of her current campaign.
Their dam Sawn Off Shotgun (More Than Ready) also has a 2yo colt named Chicago Jack in NZ with Byerley Park trainer Steven Cole. He crossed the Tasman after making $155,000 from the Baramul Stud draft at the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale in June.
Lightly-raced All Too Hard 4yo Accredited was a decisive first-up winner of the aptly-named Exceedance @ Vinery Stud Hcp (1100m) at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.
Accredited is trained by Joe Pride for Proven Thoroughbreds and had won at Nowra on debut before finishing third to subsequent Randwick winner Time To Boogie (Soboog) in a hot-form race at Gosford in July.
“He’s kicked off this campaign in fine style although there were a few anxious moments before he bullocked into the clear for Rory (Hutchings),” Pride said. “He powered home to get the job done from our other runner Merry Mac Boy (I Am Invincible).
“We’ve had to be patient. He went shin-sore three times as a younger horse but has now won two from three and there’s more in store.”
Accredited was bred and sold by Milburn Creek owner John Muir for $100,000 at the 2021 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale. His dam Well Credentialled (O’Reilly) was an Eagle Farm winner for Patinack Farm and she is a half-sister to the Show A Heart black-type winners Gotta Have Heart and Crossyourheart.
Star Turn can sign off November with a Group 1 courtesy of Alsephina in the $1.5million Railway Stakes (1600m) in Perth this Saturday. She remains a steady $4.40 favourite after drawing ideally from the tricky mile start at Ascot.
All Too Hard can also finish the month with a flourish when his Kiwi mare Babylon Berlin continues her summer campaign in the Group 3 Counties Bowl (1100m) at Pukekohe on Saturday. The brilliant front-running sprinter is being set for the Group 1 Sistema Railway (1200m) at Pukekohe on New Year’s Day.
Babylon Berlin was only beaten a head by champion mare Imperatriz in the 2023 Sistema Railway.
