Exciting colt Deep Respect is the latest black-type prospect to emerge for Champion sire Deep Field and Vinery Stud partner Greg Perry.
Deep Respect won his maiden on debut at Doomben last month and returned to claim a 3yo open-class sprint there on Saturday. After settling outside the speed, stable jockey James Orman kept him on a straight course to win running away by over a length from Surreal Ascot (Kobayashi). “What a superb start to this colt’s career,” trainer Kelly Schweida declared. “And we want to keep him a colt because he’s by Deep Field.
“He’s a real beast but once behind the gates he knows it’s time to go. He’s a gorgeous looking horse and will have a break now for some of those better races. He’s a Magic Millions horse and that’s the goal.”
The $3million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) at the Gold Coast is scheduled for Saturday, January 13.
Deep Respect (3c Deep Field – La Sevena by Congrats) was bred and sold by Perry through the Vinery consignment at the 2022 Magic Millions Yearling Sale. He made $240,000 to a syndicate managed by Darren Wilson and Perry kept a share just like the deal his Greenwich Stud operation had closed at the Gold Coast in 2020 when retaining a 20% share in close relation Artorius (Flying Artie).
“Kelly has always had a high opinion of him,” Perry said. “He put him over 400m in a jump-out as an August 2yo and he just blew them away in the final 100m. We’ve had enquires from Hong Kong and it was encouraging to see him win over 1350m on Saturday. He looks a progressive colt but only does what’s required.”
Deep Respect is from an unraced half-sister to the Perry-bred Group 1 winner Delectation (VRC Darley Classic) and the dam of his recently-retired Group 1 star Artorius (MRC Blue Diamond & ATC Canterbury Stakes). He’s bred on a 4 x 5 cross to Fappiano (Mr Prospector) and Perry has a good strike-rate with his damsire Congrats (USA). The former Vinery shuttler sired 45 Stakes-winners world-wide and 90% of them were females.
The decision to keep Deep Respect a colt gained ground after his sire Deep Field (Northern Meteor) was pensioned following non-commercial fertility rates at Newgate Farm. His first sire sons include the Stakes winners Cosmic Force, Portland Sky and Aysar.
Perry had a soft spot for Deep Field and bred a half-brother to Artorius in October 2021. Artorius signed off a Group 1 career with a fourth in the QEII Jubilee Stakes (1200m) at Royal Ascot in June and is now covering his first mares this season.
Perry has also selected Zoustar as the first cover for his Group 1 MRC Oakleigh Plate (1100m) winner Marabi. Caulfield’s ultimate speed-test extended an unbeaten seven-start winning streak for the flying daughter of I Am Invincible. Marabi carried the ‘Big V’ brand with distinction right through to a last-start defeat in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville in May.
