More Than Ready sired his second smart 3yo maiden winner within 24 hours when Spirit And Fire was successful in Sydney on Wednesday.
The Vinery champion struck with John Camilleri’s homebred filly Clockwork Orange at Pakenham on Tuesday and then chimed in with Spendthrift Farm’s colt at Canterbury.
Spirit And Fire is trained by Team Hawkes and always looked the winner as an odds-on favourite on debut over 1100 metres. “He jumped straight to the front and didn’t give up the lead when tackled down the back straight,” Michael Hawkes said. “He’s got above average ability but isn’t mentally there just yet.”
Spirit And Fire is a son of More Than Ready and G2 Silver Slipper Stakes winner Amelia’s Dream (Redoute’s Choice). A $700,000 buy at the 2015 Inglis Easter yearling sale, he has been given time to mature and that could pay dividends in a stakes race during the spring carnivals.
“He’s still learning and Spendthrift have been very patient after entrusting us with such a nice colt,” Hawkes added. “We haven’t been in a rush with Spirit And Fire and there’s plenty of improvement to come.”
Spendthrift Farm bought More Than Ready’s Kentucky-bred star Tom’s Ready as a shuttle prospect after a Group 2 victory in the Woody Stephens Stakes at Belmont Park.
