Mexican Miss is the latest black-type winner for More Than Ready after continuing her hot streak in the Jersey Lilly Stakes (1700m) in Texas.
The five year-old rallied late to claim a third win in her last five starts at Sam Houston Park on Saturday evening. She’s just a neck and head away from being undefeated since Thanksgiving.
In a full field of 12 mares on turf, Mexican Miss found clear running on the outside and picked off horses to down even-money favourite Cassatt (Tapit) by a neck. “She just took off around the last turn,” jockey Mitch Murrill said. “She’s a nice mare.”
Mexican Miss was bred by Patinack Farm in Kentucky out of Champion Chile 3YO Laguna Plateada (Sir Cat) who is from the family of G1 Santa Anita Hcp winner Malek.
Trainer Joe Sharp shipped the mare in from New Orleans and he thanked owner Brad Grady at the presentation. “I’m grateful to Brad for his patience. This was her stakes debut and the wait was worth it.”
More Than Ready had 3 yearlings gross $520,000 at the Melbourne Premier yearling sale this week headed by a $200,000 colt bought by trainer David Hayes. The colt’s Group 2 placed dam Sublime Girl (Encosta de Lago) is closely related to Lindsay Park’s G1 Victoria Derby winner King’s High.
Vinery champion More Than Ready is second only to Giant’s Causeway among stakes winning sires in North America.
