Congrats filly Pangburn maintained her perfect first-up record in the LR Maryland Media Stakes (1700m) at Laurel on Saturday.
It completed a rapid-fire black-type double for Congrats following Polar River’s runaway in the Listed UAE 1000 Guineas (1600m) at Meydan on Thursday evening. She has won her first three starts by a combined 30 lengths and is being considered for a trip to the G1 Kentucky Oaks in May.
Pangburn (4f Congrats – It’s True Love by Yes It’s True) had won on debut at Ellis Park in 2014 and returned from a winter spell for a fresh victory at Oaklawn Park this time last year.
The Tony Dutrow trainee was last seen finishing fourth in the LR Thirty Eight Go Go Stakes (1600m) at Laurel on Boxing Day. She tracked Mei Ling before driving past the odds-on favourite to score by a half-length.
“I stayed behind the speed and, when we got to the top of the stretch, she started to run,” said jockey Jevian Toledo. “I didn’t have any problems at all.”
Pangburn showed ability from the outset and had been runner-up to Cristina’s Journey in the G2 Pocahontas Stakes at Churchill Downs in September 2014. They beat home Take Charge Brandi who was subsequently named Champion USA 2YO Filly.
She was also stakes placed in last year’s G3 Honeybee Stakes and G3 Iowa Oaks.
Dutrow trains the filly for Arkansas lumberman John Ed Anthony who operates Shortleaf Stable. She’s related to G1 Preakness Stakes winner Tank’s Prospect and made $130,000 at the 2013 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky yearling sale.
