Myboycharlie filly Jameka landed a long-term plan by trainer Ciaron Maher to score a convincing victory in the G1 VRC Oaks (2500m) at Flemington on Thursday.
Maher sent Jameka for a spell straight after her Group 2 victory in the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) in March. “The VRC Oaks has been her mission since she won the Sires,” Maher admitted. “She clean-winded and a beautiful mover and Damien (Oliver) rated her perfectly in front.”
The VRC Oaks was the third Group 1 win for Vinery sire Myboycharlie following Euro Charline (USA Beverly D Stakes) and Peggy Jean (Sydney Sires’ Produce Stakes).
Jameka (3f Myboycharlie – Mine Game by General Nediym) relaxed in the lead and stayed on strongly in the straight to defeat Honesta (Monaco Consul) and Ambience (Street Cry). She was a popular winner with punters after finishing second in the G1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) and winning her final lead-up against the colts in the G2 Moonee Valley Vase (2040m).
“She relaxed and dropped the bit so I didn’t hesitate to go forward,” Oliver said. “I had faith in her staying ability and decided to go for home when we straightened. All credit to Ciaron. She’s had a faultless campaign and the Oaks has been written all over her this prep.”
Maher trained last year’s VRC Oaks winner Set Square (Reset) and he bought Jameka from Gilgai Farm owner Rick Jamieson for $130,000 at the 2014 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale.
“Jameka is a similar-type to Set Square and both have that real staying ability. Today’s win open up plenty of options for next year.”
Myboycharlie (Ire) stands for an $11,000 (inc GST) service fee at Vinery.
