Vinery sire Mossman received another accolade on Friday evening when his star youngster Admiral was named 2013-14 Tasmanian 2YO of the Year.
Admiral (Mossman – Reunification by West Quest) was odds-on to claim the honour during the Tasmanian Thoroughbreds awards ceremony at Wrest Point in Hobart.
The Barry Campbell trained gelding dominated the local juvenile scene winning 6 of his 7 starts including the LR Gold Sovereign Stakes, LR Elwick Stakes, Autumn 2YO Classic and Tasmanian Sires’ Produce Stakes to net close to $200,000 in prizemoney.
“He should be unbeaten,” Campbell claimed. “He copped a rain-affected track at his only loss in the Alexandra Plate just before Christmas.”
Admiral is raced by part-owner and breeder Bruno Calabro along with Ron and Trudy Schwanke and Denise Martin of Star Thoroughbreds. Calabro bought his dam Reunification when she was offered for sale by the late Dudley Clark.
Reunification won 12 races for Clark and Campbell and was carrying Admiral when she changed hands.
Campbell also prepared former Tasmanian 2YO Champion Alfa who crossed Bass Strait to win the G1 Caulfield Guineas in 1996. The Spreyton trainer is now weighing up a Group 1 campaign on the mainland for his latest star.
“We think Admiral can measure up to a race like the Australian Guineas,” Campbell said. “He wasn’t a natural two year-old. We didn’t overcook him last season – just short, sharp preps.”
The Tasmanian award rounded off a sensational season for Mossman in the juvenile division. His G1 Golden Slipper winning filly Mossfun was instrumental in the Vinery stallion claiming the Australian 2YO sires’ title with earnings over $3.01 million.
Mossfun was subsequently named co-winner of the NSW 2YO of the Year award.
