Red Ransom mare Thump made a winning return to the racetrack for Cressfield Stud’s Bruce Neil on Saturday.
The Kris Lees-trained Thump turned her spring form around with a victory the Group III Triscay Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.
Last in both the Group II Missile Stakes at Randwick on August 8 and the Group III Toy Show Quality (1300m) at Randwick on August 23 looked to have spelled the end of race career of the former Patinack colour-bearer.
With Tye Angland in the saddle, Thump held off the challenge of Danesiri by a short-neck with a neck back to My Sabeel in third.
“She pulled up distressed from her recent run here six months ago,” Lees said.
“So she went and had a visit to Fastnet Rock and came back.”
“She’s had a long time off but she’s suited to this style of racing, she won a Surround Stakes sitting wide with that momentum type of run and she got that perfect ride from Tye today.”
“The target all along was the Coolmore Classic (at Rosehill on March 14) and she appears to be on track.”
Purchased privately from Patinack Farm by Cressfield Stud, Thump was winning her fourth stakes race taking her overall record to 4 wins, 1 second and 2 thirds from 17 starts for earnings of $499,000.
Owner of one of the most commercial broodmare bands in the nation, Cressfield won the Triscay Stakes twelve months earlier with Lilliburlero (Redoute’s Choice).
The 4yo daughter of Red Ransom is the fifth foal of the former class racemare Oomph who was purchased by Patinack in 2006 for $260,000. A half-sister to Chester Manifold Stakes (LR) winner Noble Red, Oomph numbered four wins in Listed races amongst her six wins and over $300,000 in earnings.
A daughter of champion stallion Flying Spur, Oomph has a 2yo colt colt by Lope De Vaga (IRE) named Snoopy who broke his maiden at the first attempt in a maiden at Seymour in January 21.
After missing to Husson (ARG) in 2012 and slipping to So You Think in 2013, Oomph was covered by All Too Hard last spring.
