Red-hot Vinery stallion Mossman extended his lead at the top of the Australian 2YO Sires’ premiership on Tuesday thanks to VOBIS Gold and his filly Mossbeat.
Mossbeat (2f Mossman – Beatrice by Grand Lodge) claimed the first flat race at the Warrnambool carnival with a last-to-first victory in the $100,000 VOBIS Gold Strike (1000m). She overhauled local hope Already Leica (Ready’s Image) to score by over a length eased down.
The Robbie Griffiths trained filly was a $26,000 buy at the 2013 Inglis Premier yearling sale from the draft of Glenelg Park and the VOBIS Gold Strike carried $70,000 in prizemoney and $30,000 in bonuses.
“There are 800 owners in Mossbeat and at least 40 of them are here today,” Hancox Bloodstock manager Rob Peacock said. “We bought 6 yearlings for them last year and this one is the first to the races.”
Mossbeat was facing the starter for the third time after placings at Caulfield and Sandown earlier this month. “She’s a real trier and has her own game plan,” jockey Ivan Culliver said. “She went through the ground good and really picked up in the straight.”
The VOBIS Gold Strike prizemoney helped increase Mossman’s 2YO earnings to over $2.85 million this season. That’s a sizeable buffer over Exceed and Excel ($2.06m) and Testa Rossa ($1.97m).
Group 1 Golden Slipper winner Mossfun is his flag-bearer in the juvenile ranks and Rob Peacock is confident there’s more to come with Mossbeat. “The money is fantastic with the VOBIS Gold bonus kicking in,” he said. “I think we are going to have a lot of fun with this filly.”
Mossman sired his 11th individual stakes winner since August 1 and his 30th overall when Hopfgarten kept rising up the ranks in the G3 Gunsynd Classic (1600m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
Vinery will stand Mossman for a $27,500 (inc gst) service fee this year.
