OUSTANDING Mossman colt Hendricus scored the richest pay-day so far making off with $162,000 after a brilliant come from behind win in today’s Inglis Bonus Mile (1600m) at Warwick Farm.
The John O’Shea trained colt was the medium of heavy support firming from $8 into $4.40 favourite at the jump and while he gave his backers a few anxious moments early on, his superior acceleration was enough to get him home.
”Hendricus probably had to go a bit further back than Nash (Rawiller) would have liked but that’s the way to ride him. We’ve always felt that,” O’Shea said.
”He’s a talented colt and he showed it today. He has a good race in him somewhere down the line.”
The race marked a happy reunion between horse and jockey, with Rawiller riding the colt for the first time on his debut at Canterbury in April.
”He’s still learning his craft, I watched his run over 1300m the other day and he never really got a chance to travel,” Rawiller said.
”Today he travelled well into the race and I was confident if I got an uninterrupted run over the last furlong he would hit the line bloody good.
”I ended up coming to the outside and he was never really going to get beat at that stage.(Hendricus) lengthened unbelievably well.”
Hendricus was sold at the 2010 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling sale for $62,500 and is one of Mossman’s 201 individual winners from 314 starter’s.
