Big Brown’s tally of individual 2YO winners so far this season climbed to 14 from just 29 starters after the filly Miss Lucky Sevens won at Churchill Downs on the weekend.
It was a case of second time lucky for the Big Brown filly.
Miss Lucky Sevens was being hailed as her sire’s 7th 2YO winner when she was crossed the line in first place at Arlington last month only to have stewards declare a no-race due to several horses, herself included, being hampered when the inside running rail collapsed on the final bend.
There were no such dramas for the Wayne Catalano trained filly this time who came away to record and impressive win at the scene of Big Brown’s epic 2008 Kentucky Derby triumph.
Starting as favourite, Miss Lucky Sevens settled in second, assumed command along the hedge and extended her advantage to 2 1/2 lengths at the line.
America’s most exciting freshman stallion Big Brown has been fast-tracked to the top of the famous Three Chimney’s roster after a sensational opening to his stud career.
The nation’s acknowledged ‘wonderhorse’ has had his 2013 service fee set at US$35,000 making him the most expensive of the Kentucky farm’s 12 resident stallions.
Three Chimneys’ is one of the world’s most acclaimed stud farms having been home to luminaries like Seattle Slew, Chief’s Crown, Capote, Rahy, Americain’s sire Dynaformer as well as Australia’s own Noholme.
Big Brown’s early success in the USA and Europe with his first crop is certain to focus the attention on his first Australian bred crop that will feature prominently at the 2013 yearling sale series.
“Big Brown’s results take away the unknown element that is always associated with any first season sire,” says Vinery’s Adam White.
“Buyers in Australia will have seen that these horses are up and running as two-year-olds and given what a champion 3YO Big Brown was himself, there is the promise that they will train on to be bigger and better after that.
“Big Brown won his first and only start as a two-year-old by nearly 12-lens and that was one of his two wins on turf – from his only two runs on the grass. He is a Danzig grandson so, like we have seen with More Than Ready, his turf credentials are every bit as good as his dirt.”
