THERE were plenty of cheering at Vinery Stud on Wednesday when Commanding Jewel powered away from her rivals to win the Group 1 MRC Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield.
Not only was the Leon Corston’s trained filly born, reared and sold out of Vinery’s 2011 Magic Millions Yearling Sale draft for $205,000 she is also part-owned by her breeder and Vinery Stud partner Greg Perry.
Perry also bred and sold last year’s Thousand Guineas winner, the unbeaten Atlantic Jewel, for $320,000 at the Gold Coast in 2010.
Unfortunately, the dam of both fillies – Zabeel mare Regard – passed away without producing another foal.
“It’s very sad for Greg that he lost the mare, they don’t come along very often,” Vinery general manager Peter Orton said.
“But thankfully Greg has stayed in Commanding Jewel and I know that the win would be very satisfying for him.”
It was Perry’s second Group 1 win of the calendar year as an owner, he also has a piece of Blue Diamond winner and Golden Slipper placegetter, Samaready.
