A WIDE barrier and top weight of 58.5kgs proved no impediment to Mossman gelding Rhyolite at Tamworth yesterday with the locally trained gelding going on to score an extraordinary 8 3/4 lens win in the Tooheys Handicap (1200m).
The Craig Martin trained 4YO was formed from $5 to start $4.60 but managed to win like an odds-on pop never serious challenged for the prize.
”You don’t see too many horses win by almost 9-lens these days,” says Vinery’s Conor Phelan.
”As it was he ran fast time for the 1200m, and wasn’t really pushed out with such a big margin to the second horse so the effort was supreme.”
Rhyolite was snapped up by Martin at the 2008 Inglis Classic Yearling sale for just $10,000.
