MORE Joyous replaced the tag of ‘glamour mare’ with ‘champion mare’ after posting her tenth straight win in Sydney yesterday adding the aptly named Queen of the Turf (1500m) to her incredible haul.
The daughter of More Than Ready made light work of her rivals to bag her fifth Group One win, her 14th career victory from 18 starts, and takes her earnings to $2.2 million.
”More Joyous is very special, it is horses like her that bring people to the races,” trainer Gai Waterhouse said. ”This is what it is all about.
”She is right up there with the great horses I’ve trained. I’ve had some outstanding horses, like Grand Armee, Desert War, Juggler, All Our Mob . . . she is as good as any of them.
”Is she the best? Well, how many Group 1 races has she won now? That’s five and she has only lost one race in two years. If she isn’t a champion, she is the closest thing to it. I call her a champion — I think she deserves that.”
More Joyous’ comfortably 2.8-lens win in the Queen of the Turf saw her strengthen her vice like grip on the $2.2 million Doncaster Mile run at Royal Randwick on April 16.
The mare is rated a $2 chance on TAB Sportsbet Fixed Odds to give Waterhouse her seventh win a Group 1 feature mile at Randwick.
