CONSECUTIVE winners over the holiday period by siblings Top Drop and Fine Drop comes as a timely boost to the horses’ half-sister which will be offered at the Inglis Classic Yearling sale.

The filly is a daughter of classic winner and More Than Ready’s son Benicio, which provides for a 3X3 double cross of the immortal Danehill.

“If you are going to have a double cross of Danehill – and I am not a big fan of double crosses that close up – I think this one is in the right place,” Horwitz says.

“It’s not top-line to top-line, it is mixed in there on the damside and they’re the right places to have it if you are going to have a double cross of Danehill.”

(Top Drop, the Horwitz-bred Group Two runner-up, likewise carries a 3X3 double-cross of Danehill).

This current filly is the third foal of her dam, Fine Red (by Red Ransom) and like her older siblings has the looks to match her pedigree.

“She is a lovely filly and as well as being a half to Top Drop, she is also a half to Fine Drop who looked very promising as an early two-year-old, and he is just starting to come good again now,” said Horwitz.

Fine Drop sold for $145,000, while Top Drop made $110,000, with Horwitz choosing to take a 25 per cent share in the former.

Fine Drop scored his second victory in his past three outings when spearing away to a 0-8lens win at Kembla last Saturday.

The week before, his younger half, Top Drop, went to the the top the market for the $1m GCTC Magic Millions Trophy (1400m) after a deserved win at Randwick on Boxing day.

An important component in all three siblings’ make-up is that their dam is by Vinery Stud’s world champion sire Red Ransom.

Red Ransom is a highly regarded broodmare sire in the USA and Europe, but has only 80 starters in Australia (via his daughters).

Forty of those are winners, including stakeswinners Red Ruler, Retrieve, Chance Bye, Moulin lady and Slapstick.

Horwitz knows Red Ransom as well as any other, more than most, having bred his champion son, Charge Forward, and is certain that the horse will carve out a successful career as a broodmare sire.

“He has been a most underrated sire, and I think it is only the beginning because, a bit like Charge Forward, Red Ransom is an outcross for that Northern Dancer line and it gives people the variety that they need, otherwise everything would be all Northern Dancer – a bit like 10 or 15 years ago everything was all Star Kingdom.

“Now you are struggling to find Star Kingdom.”

Horwitz’s filly is among seven lots consigned to the Inglis Classic (Jan 23-25) under the Vinery Stud (as agent) banner.

She joins two other Benicios, as well as an Excites (first 2yo runner was a winner), a filly by Dubleo and one each by Elusive Quality and Horse of the Year (Chile), Trotamondo.
