In-form Adelaide jockey Jake Toeroek improved his winning strike-rate on Star Turn stayer Flyway when they combined for a convincing victory in the Sportsbet Hcp (1709m) on Wednesday.

Flyway didn’t flinch despite racing three-wide and shouldering 60kg on a Heavy 10 surface at Gawler.  He ranged up to the leaders turning for home and kept up a strong gallop to score by a couple of lengths from front-runner Spelman (Toronado).

“He just seems to run for me and we had to work hard to get there today,” Toeroek said after making it 4 wins in 8 starts on the tough gelding.  “He drew a shocking gate and the race didn’t map the best, either.”

Flyway (5g Star Turn – Secretary Bird by Testa Rossa) is trained by Chris Beig for a syndicate that includes Jason Carvill and Andrew McClure.  He had initially started out with Edward Cummings and signed off that stint with a maiden win at Goulburn.  Bred by Baramul Stud, he’s from a full-sister to NZ Castletown Stakes (LR, 1200m) winner Testa Secret.

The Star Turn – Testa Rossa cross has a stratospheric 80% strike-rate led by 2022 Inglis Nursery (LR, 1000m) winner Saltaire.

Secretary Bird’s 4yo mare That’s All Good (All Too Hard) won a Sunshine Coast maiden second time out for trainers John Symonds and Sheila Laxon and her 2yo is an unraced All Too Hard filly named Sawmill.

Stable representative Felicity Atkinson had ridden Flyway at his last start at Gawler.  “He’s been a bit hit-and-miss and that was a big improvement,” she said.  “The pattern didn’t suit him last time.  The on-pace runners got away so we decided to be more positive today and Jake got the job done.”

Star Turn will stand at Vinery for $27,500 (inc GST) again this year with payment on a live foal.  For bookings or further information, contact Adam, Harry, McKoy or Peter on (02) 6543 8333.
