Once Again My Girl made a stunning debut at Scone on Monday when she smashed the track-record while careering her way to victory in the Akasawa Showcase Plate (1000m).
The Star Turn front-runner put the best part of four lengths on her rivals while clocking in at a blinding 55.75s. Trained by Brett Cavanough, she shattered the previous mark of 56.04s set by John O’Shea’s speed-machine Lost And Running (NZ) in May 2020.
Once Again My Girl (3f Star Turn – Once More A Lady by Congrats) is a homebred for Vinery partner Greg Perry (Greenwich Stud) and he races her with Cavanough’s wife Lauren.
“She chipped a hind fetlock early on,” Perry recalled. “Brett has taken her along quietly and we will continue to take our time. Her E-Trakka figures had been exceptional and they were all running time on Monday. There was a tailwind, too but she’s fast and she’s bred to be fast.
“Star Turn is doing a tremendous job at Vinery and she’s the first foal of Once More A Lady who almost broke the Warwick Farm 1200m track-record as a 3yo filly for Joe Pride.”
The mare’s 2yo filly More Than A Star is by Star Turn’s sire Star Witness and she was a front-running winner of a Newcastle nursery on debut last month. There were excuses second-up at Scone on Monday when stewards reported she raced keenly in the early and middle stages before being held up rounding the home turn.
More Than A Star is also raced by Greenwich Stud in partnership with Lauren Cavanough and, like her older three-quarter sister, she has a big back-end!
They’re the latest winners from one of Perry’s favourite families going back through 1993 Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr.1, 1200m) winner Lady Jakeo (Last Tycoon) to 1960s foundation mare Regal Peace (Pipe Of Peace).
Greenwich Stud has six yearlings being sold by Vinery Stud (as agent) at the upcoming Inglis Australian Easter Sale and one of the highlights is the Day 1 Deep Field – Gracie’s Lass half-brother to Artorius (Lot 153).
Perry bred and kept a share in Artorius and has a Flying Artie full-brother to him on the ground at Vinery. “The Deep Field colt is a lovely type and it’s a beautiful pedigree. He’s really progressing at Vinery and hopefully he has some of that same turn of foot as Artorius.”
Greenwich Stud’s other Day 1 bluebloods via Vinery include the Star Turn – Commanding Jewel colt (Lot 78) who continues to furnish during his yearling prep and the Written Tycoon – Dirty colt (Lot 102) who rates as one of the nicest individuals in the consignment.
