Star Turn filly Prairie Flower has earned another shot in black-type company after beating older horses at Ballarat on Friday.
She came from last to win the Hygain Hcp (1000m) at her first run since an interstate campaign in May. “There was plenty of speed in the race but she was the class runner of the field,” trainer Henry Dwyer said. “She’s a smart, tough filly and I thought it important to start this prep with a win on her home track.”
Prairie Flower had raced three times at Morphettville in the autumn winning the Adelaide Racing Carnival Hcp (1050m), running third in the Without Fear Stakes (LR, 1050m) and fourth in the David Coles Stakes (Gr.3, 1200m).
Dwyer is now looking at a start in the VRC Cap D’Antibes Stakes (LR, 1100m) at Flemington on Saturday, 10 September.
Winning jockey Will Price was always confident on Friday. “It was a nice race for her first-up and she travelled beautifully before charging home. She had to sustain a long gallop and laid in late looking to get a guide from the leader. She probably had enough on the line but will benefit fitness-wise and is definitely one to be reckoned with in town.”
Prairie Flower (3f Star Turn – Leotie by Darci Brahma) races for a syndicate managed by Wayne Kratzmann after changing for $120,000 at the 2021 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale. She was offered by Maluka Thoroughbreds (as agent) for Rockmount.
Dwyer trained her dam Leotie who was Group 3-placed at Caulfield for Rockmount owners Geoff Guest and Jill Kewish. She is a three-quarter sister-in-blood to MVRC Alexandra Stakes (LR, 1600m) winner Marianne whose first named foal Yaletown (Vancouver) won last year’s ATC Tulloch Stakes (Gr.2, 2000m).
Star Turn will parade with the rest of the Vinery roster at the Stud’s Open Days next Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28 starting at 8.30am. RSVP is essential. Email: mckoy@vinery.com.au
