The global reach of More Than Ready (USA) delivered a Group 1 at Flemington last Saturday and there’s the very real possibility he can grab a Group 1 double at the Breeders’ Cup meeting this weekend.
The Vinery legend’s Australian-bred, South African-based son Gimmethegreenlight sired Yulong Prince to win the Cantala Stakes Gr.1 on the first day of the Melbourne Cup carnival. He will headline the sireline when retiring to Yulong Stud in Victoria next year.
More Than Ready mares Rushing Fall and Uni (GB) will be fancied in their Breeders’ Cup assignments at Keenland on Saturday (Sunday morning AEST). Rushing Fall is the 5-2 morning-line favourite for the BC Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (1900m) and Uni has opened a 5-1 second-elect in the BC Mile (1600m).
The Chad Brown stablemates have helped More Than Ready rise to a record 7 wins at the Breeders’ Cup Championships and they both galloped impressively at Belmont on Sunday morning.
Rushing Fall drilled 800m in 50.69s with managing part-owner Bob Edwards confirming she has been training well since winning the Diana Stakes Gr.1 at Saratoga in August. “She’s a mare that works better with breaks so Chad has kept her fresh. She loves Keeneland and hopefully she gets a good trip.”
A winner of the 2017 BC Juvenile Fillies Turf Gr.1 at Del Mar, she can become only the fifth horse to notch victories in two different divisions of the Breeders’ Cup.
Uni clocked 50.60s for 800m in her final hit-out at Belmont. She was a beaten favourite last time out in the Fourstardave Stakes Gr.1 at Saratoga, however, she can join an exclusive club if successfully defending her title in the BC Mile. Only two females have won the Mile more than once, Hall of Famers Miesque (1987-88) and Goldikova (2008-10).
“The last couple of works have shown she’s really starting to show her old self,” said Bradley Weisbord who manages Uni on behalf of owners Sol Kumin, Michael Dubb, Robert LaPenta and Bethlehem Stables. “She’s got a major turn of foot and it looks like we’re going to get the right ground for Saturday. She’s won on many different surfaces but firm turf is best.”
More Than Ready also has 30-1 outsider Title Ready engaged in the $6 million BC Classic Gr.1.
Meanwhile, Yulong Prince became the first Australian Group 1 winner for Yulong Investments principal Yuesheng Zhang and he will definitely appeal to broodmare owners according to Yulong manager Sam Fairgray. “Mr Zhang wants to focus on getting the stud operation up and going and Yulong Prince is a great type with an Australian twist to his pedigree being by a More Than Ready sire out of a Canny Lad mare.”
Gimmethegreenlight was bred by David Bentata to win the Queen’s Plate Gr.1 at Kenilworth before retiring to Varsfontein Stud. He’s a half-brother to Ofcourseican (Mossman) who won a Coolmore Classic Gr.1.
Bentata also bred Seentoomany (Sebring) to win at Doomben last Saturday. She is a half-sister to Perth gallopers Jericho Missile (Belgravia Stakes LR) and Galaxy Cat who can give Vinery freshman Star Turn his first winner in the TABtouch Plate (1100m) at Ascot this Saturday.
