Headwater’s rising Tasmanian star Thespian Waters is back in work after stringing together four wins in a row during an autumn prep with Siggy Carr.
Thespian Waters signed off with a powerful come from behind victory in the Autumn 3YO Classic (1400m) at Elwick in May and Carr has him ticking along nicely ahead of an upcoming campaign that could also include a trip to the mainland.
“The Autumn Classic was his best win to date,” Carr recalled this week. “He doesn’t like the whip and put them away without the persuader. I like the Headwaters. The three I’ve trained and ridden are honest and they all have ability.”
Carr is currently sidelined from the saddle after breaking a collarbone and being concussed when falling off an unraced 2yo in a recent barrier trial. “Thespian Waters has come back bigger and stronger and we’re so excited with what’s to come,” she said. “My partner Troy (Baker) will ride him if I haven’t recovered in time.”
Current plans are a first-up assignment in the Goodwood Hcp (1100m) at Elwick on November 9 followed by the $150,000 Tasmanian Newmarket (LR, 1200m) at Mowbray on November 27.
If his form warrants a higher level of participation, Carr isn’t averse to sending Thespian Waters to Melbourne. Her Headwater flyer Periwinkle crossed Bass Strait last month to race at Sandown, however, a soft track brought her undone in a fillies and mares race won by Mighty (Spirit Of Boom).
Periwinkle is a homebred for Cressfield and could be a travelling companion for her stablemate if it ties in with a Moonee Valley sprint on top of the deck.
Thespian Waters has earned over $170,000 to date for a syndicate managed by Gary Richards who bought him from Baramul Stud for $25,000 at the 2022 Gold Coast Magic Millions.
His USA-bred dam Theatre Fan is a full-sister to Saratoga Stakes winner Queen Of The Creek (Theatrical). She’s also a three-quarter sister to the dam of Big Brown (Boundary) who shuttled to Vinery for four southern books after winning the 2008 Kentucky Derby (Gr.1, 2000m).
Headwater (Exceed And Excel) stands at Vinery and is competitively priced at a $9,900 (inc GST) fee this season with payment on a live foal. For bookings or further information contact Adam, Harry, McKoy or Peter on (02) 6543 8333.
