Vinery partner Greg Perry received a black-type update on the eve of the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale when his Headwater filly Little Miss Kubi won the Manihi Classic (LR, 1100m) at Morphettville on Saturday.
Jockey Jake Toeroek had to ignore pre-race plans to sit back on Little Miss Kubi when the expected battle between speedy front-runners Philonize and Queman didn’t materialize. The in-form hoop took the initiative and sent her forward before sprinting to a winning advantage at the furlong.
“She jumped and forced my hand from the gates,” Toeroek said. “I wanted to give her a breather but was forced to press the button too early. That left us vulnerable a long way out and then she wanted to have a good look at the winning post.
“It was a good win for a 3yo filly against older mares. I like the Headwaters and I’ve had a lot of success on them. This is my first win for Cliff Brown but there’s been a few for the Jollys.”
Toeroek is stable jockey for Richard & Chantelle Jolly and they’ve already combined to win with Headwaters like Aitch Two Oh (Without Fear Stakes LR), Karacasu and Keep Reading.
Little Miss Kubi is the 6th Stakes winner by Headwater and was the middle-leg of a Vinery-sired treble at Morphettville between Grinzinger Prince (More Than Ready) and Press Down (Press Statement).
She’s the second foal of Miss Eisenstadt (Manhattan Rain) and follows this season’s Caspar Fownes-trained Sha Tin winner Big Me (Your Song). Their second-dam Fritz’s Princess (More Than Ready) won the 2008 The Shorts (Gr.2, 1100m) at Randwick.
Greg Perry has entered six yearlings through the Vinery Stud consignment at the Inglis Australian Easter Sale and one of the highlights is tomorrow’s Deep Field – Gracie’s Lass half-brother to Group 1 sprinter Artorius (Lot 153).
His other yearlings are colts by Star Turn (Lot 78), Written Tycoon (Lot 102) & plus fillies by Zoustar (Lot 259), Toronado (Lot 282) & All Too Hard (Lot 350). Perry also sells an Exceedance – Runway Star colt (Lot 327) in partnership with Pat Hodgens, Neil Werrett, Steve McCann (Encompass International) and Alan Green (Echo Beach Bloodstock).
