Headwater’s current 3yo crop continues to build on the Melbourne Cup carnival victory of his brilliant filly Aitch Two Oh earlier this month.
Aitch Two Oh won the VRC Red Roses Stakes (Gr.3, 1100m) at Flemington and the Vinery sire has followed up with promising 3yo maiden winners Sorgente and Waterworld.
Sorgente started the weekend with a bang for trainer Chris Waller when he powered home for a first-up victory in the P’nut Street Noodles Hcp (1250m) at Canterbury on Friday evening.
Stable rep Damien Fitton said it was onwards and upwards for Sorgente who had been placed at Randwick during a short juvenile prep in June. His dam Sozzini (Bernardini) had won on debut at Sale in a career restricted to three starts for Waller and Winx’s owner Peter Tighe.
Fitton also mentioned it was the first win for Cannon Hayes Stud who bred and sold the Headwater colt for $90,000 at the 2021 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. The Scone nursery is owned by David Morrissey and he has entered a colt by Vinery sire All Too Hard from Wahine (Lot 533) for the Gold Coast Magic Millions in January.
Waterworld took the first step living up to the potential that attracted Peter Moody when he won the Hygain Plate (1100m) on a Soft 7 at Kyneton on Tuesday. The three-length victory was an easy watch for connections after Brian Higgins kicked him clear into the straight.
“He jumped well and took full advantage in front,” Higgins said. “He was in a nice rhythm and we were always in control. He’s been well-placed by Peter and will be even better on top of the ground.”
Waterworld was bred by Vinery partner Greg Perry from Leica’s Lass (Pluck) and was initially sold by Vinery for $62,000 at the 2021 Inglis Scone Yearling Sale. Offered again at last year’s Inglis Ready2Race Sale, he was targeted by Blueblood Thoroughbreds and Moody for $125,000.
“Headwater is doing a tremendous job,” Moody said at Riverside Stables. “This colt is strong, well-grown and has a terrific action. He’s been well-educated and did it easily breezing in a very quick 10.17s.”
Aitch Two Oh notched the 10th Stakes win for Headwater in the Red Roses and she heads his 3yo roll-call of 13 individual winners this season. That crop also includes Innoconstruction who won a Conghua 800m barrier trial last Thursday.
Innoconstruction is another Headwater graduate from last year’s Inglis Ready2Race Sale. He was purchased by Shinkansen Bloodstock’s Keith Lam for $120,000 and transferred to trainer Francis Lui after winning a Randwick trial by three lengths in May.
Headwater (Exceed And Excel) has a dozen yearlings catalogued for the 2023 Gold Coast Magic Millions starting with the colt from Kiss For Gran (Show A Heart) due to parade in the first hour of Day 1. Catalogued as Lot 30 by Alexia Fraser Bloodstock (as agent), he’s a half-brother to Kisukano (Bel Esprit) who defeated Rothfire in the $500,000 QTIS Jewel 2YO Stakes (1200m) for owner-breeders Peter and Robert Reeves.
