Five first-crop yearlings sent Exceedance to the top of the freshman sires’ leader-board at the Adelaide Magic Millions Sale on Wednesday.
The Vinery stallion’s consignment averaged $89,000 over two sessions with his Day 2 colt from Streetcar Isabelle (Lot 357) topping trade at $130,000. He was purchased by David Jolly from Kambula Stud and is a half-brother to MRC W J Adams Stakes (LR, 1000m) winner Streetcar Stranger (Stratum). Jolly knows the ‘Streetcar’ family having trained the colt’s older half-brother and their dam who won the 2015 Oakbank Stakes (LR, 1100m).
Another Kambula Stud graduate by Exceedance to make six-figures on Wednesday was the filly from Sweet Melody (Lot 365) that changed hands for $120,000. She was purchased by agent Suman Hedge on behalf of leading South Australian businessman Rob Chapman and trainer Travis Doudle.
“She’s a beautiful moving, strong-looking filly and there’s even more physical development to come,” Doudle said on Thursday morning. “Exceedance was top-class and there’s black-type right down the page under the dam.”
Sweet Melody (Tavistock) was bred by Sir Patrick Hogan and was initially trained by Lisa Latta to win a Hastings maiden before crossing the Tasman for a further two victories at Sandown. Her first foal Capital Legend (Capitalist) won first-up in Hong Kong for trainer Caspar Fownes on Xmas Eve.
Her Exceedance filly was the most expensive of five Adelaide graduates that Doudle will be training for Chapman. “Suman has been a big help and Rob is a fantastic supporter of our stable. Hopefully by this time next year we’ve hit the ground running.”
Doudle bought his first yearling for Chapman when paying $150,000 for a Kermadec filly from Sentimental Star (More Than Ready) at last year’s Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale. She will shape up at three like the rest of her Peters Investments family in Perth.
Vinery sires Star Turn and All Too Hard finished equal second on the Adelaide leader-board yesterday with a pair of colts from Baramul Stud that sold for $170,000
The Star Turn colt from Nubian (More Than Ready) was purchased for a Hong Kong client by Kiwi trainer Jenna Mahoney. The All Too Hard colt out of Palo Duro (More Than Ready) was knocked down to agent Jeff Gordon and trainer Nick Ryan.
Alligator Blood begins another big weekend for All Too Hard in the $5million All-Star Mile (1600m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday. He has opened a $2.80 favourite despite regular rider Tim Clark electing to partner stablemate Platinum Jubilee in the Golden Slipper Stakes at Rosehill.
All Too Hard’s Hong Kong star Wellington will be gunning a second Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup (Gr.1, 1400m) at Sha Tin Tin on Sunday. Forty minutes later, his promising 4yo Keefy takes on the best young stayers in training in the Hong Kong Derby (LR, 2000m).
