Vinery’s exciting young son of champion stallion Exceed And Excel, Exceedance, is on a roll recording Stakes winners on back-to-back weekends. His talented daughter Pure Excess broke her maiden in sensational style on Saturday, taking out the Group 3 W.A. Champion Fillies Stakes (1600m) in Perth for trainer Daniel Morton.
Having placed in each of her first four career starts, including twice as a two-year-old and most recently in the Listed Burgess Queen Stakes, the progressive filly had been knocking on the door for black-type success. Facing a strong field featuring last season’s WA Champion 2YO, Talkanco, Pure Excess settled in the second half of the field under jockey Steven Parnham as a hot early tempo unfolded. Sweeping wide on the turn, she unleashed an electrifying finish to dive at the line and prevail by just 0.03 lengths.
The victory brought Morton his second Champion Fillies Stakes triumph, and he was full of praise for the rising talent:
“She’s been training beautifully—I was so confident. She’s the real deal, she is very good,” Morton said.“She was chasing down a very good horse, but I trusted she’d get there, even though it was the barest of margins! A super effort, and great for Oakland Park Stud. They’re huge supporters of ours and it’s nice to get a big one for them.”
Parnham was also quick to praise the filly:
“She’s a talented filly and was unlucky in the Burgess Queen—she would have made her presence felt with clear running,” he said.“I was confident she’d be hard to beat today. Even meeting Talkanco 4kg worse, I felt she’d run out the mile strongly—and she did.”
Now a winner of more than $200,000, Pure Excess boasts a record of one win and four placings from five starts. She will now be aimed at Group 1 company, with connections weighing up a tilt at the WA Guineas or WFA Northerly Stakes.
Bred and raced by Oakland Park Stud, Pure Excess is the third foal of Canadian-bred, Stakes-placed mare Pure Purity who was sold in-foal to Exceedance for $140,000 at the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale and now resides permanently at Oakland Park.
Pure Excess becomes the fifth Stakes winner for Exceedance, who is quickly building momentum with 8% Stakes performers to runners and a growing list of horses poised to break through. He also added two more city winners last week, with Apex scoring his second metropolitan victory and Brave One notching his fourth metro win from just nine starts.
Standing at $33,000 inc. GST this season and covering at an extraordinary 73% pregnancy rate per cycle, Exceedance is an obvious choice for breeders as we head towards the end of the breeding season.
