Vinery sire Ole Kirk kicked off a record-breaking Inglis Australian Weanling Sale on Monday with a $150,000 second-crop colt that was purchased by leading bloodstock agent Suman Hedge.
Lot 1 of the two-day auction is from well-bred mare I Am (I Am Invincible) and was catalogued by B2B Thoroughbreds. “He was a must-inspect colt,” B2B manager Kelly Stevenson said. “He’s well-balanced with a lot of bone and substance.”
He was the first of 8 buys for Hedge and his clients in a highly-competitive market at Riverside Stakes. “He’s an athletic colt and a sweet mover from a well-credentialled family,” Hedge explained. “Ole Kirk has sired some nice types and they’ve sold consistently well this year.”
The $150,000 foal is from I Am who was a Bendigo 3yo maiden winner for trainer Tony McEvoy. Her first is unraced 2yo Better Shape Up (Toronado) with Archie Alexander and the second is a yearling colt by Ole Kirk that was purchased by Richard & Chantelle Jolly for $120,000 at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale in March.
“We’re looking forward to seeing what this guy has to offer,” Richard Jolly said. “He was sold out soon after the Premier and ticks all the right boxes to be up and running as a 2YO. He’s well put together with a wonderful temperament and looks to match.”
B2B bought I Am off the track for $200,000 at the 2020 Magic Millions National Sale. She’s a half-sister to Canberra National Sprint (LR, 1400m) winner Cuba (All Too Hard) and Sydney Group 1 winners close up in her pedigree include La Baraka (The Galaxy), Astern (Golden Rose) and Alizee (Flight Stakes).
Vinery has 11 mares catalogued for the Australian Broodmare Sale at Riverside Stables on Friday. Five of them are in foal to Ole Kirk: Lot 246 Our Girl Sniti (Snitzel), Lot 284 Spoils (Snitzel), Lot 294 Tastebud (Hinchinbrook), Lot 310 Vienna Classic (Snitzel) and Lot 409 History (Sidestep).
