Keep Reading’s on-pace victory at Murray Bridge on Saturday proved once again he gets better the deeper he goes into a preparation.

The Headwater speedster was racing for the sixth time this campaign when a convincing winner of the Northpoint Murraylands Hcp (1000m).  That was one more outing than it took him to wind up for a feature victory in the Gytrash Series Final (1200m) at Morphettville last November.

Keep Reading is one of five individual Headwater winners trained by Richard and Chantelle Jolly and they have won 14 races for over $840,000 in prizemoney.  He also gave them a successful start to the new season after a third title running in 2022-23.  “Dad’s away on holidays and it’s pretty busy with 60 in work,” Chantelle said as Kayla Crowther brought the winner back to scale.  “But just like last season, we’re off with a winner at our first metro meeting!

“He’s been a little plain his last couple but was back to himself with a dominant win after a freshen-up with Kayla at her property in the Kuipto Forrest.  She and her partner Tommy Stokes are good friends and do a fantastic job up there.”

Keep Reading (5g Headwater – Madame Bookworm by Publishing) is raced by Hong Kong-based agent David Price and has now earned $218,000 after being bred and sold by Vinery for $26,000 at the 2019 Magic Millions National Foal Sale.

Madame Bookworm is a winning half-sister to Listed Singapore Juvenile Championship winner Mystic Master (Snippetson) and she’s also the dam of Star Club (Star Turn) who was placed at Sha Tin second time out for trainer Richard Gibson in May.  He will start the new Hong Kong season with David Hall.

Price Bloodstock Management has sourced hundreds of winners since the turn of the century headed by Hong Kong legend Silent Witness (El Moxie) who was voted World’s Champion Sprinter from 2003 to 2005.

Headphones doubled up for Headwater at Murray Bridge when she nailed the In Memory Of Simone Montgomerie & Melanie Tyndall Hcp (1400m) on Saturday.  “This is her home track and she loves 1400m here,” trainer Jordan Frew said.  “It was a perfect ride by Sam Payne and thanks also to Hannah Bryce who has done all the work at home on the mare.

“Sam sat in the box-seat before pulling out to the best part of ground and she did just enough to fall in.

Headphones is a 6yo homebred mare for Phil Bennett who sent her dam Cybercyn (Staaraq) to Vinery to be covered by Headwater.  The mare reached a career-high in the 2011 Colin Hayes Memorial Cup (LR, 1600m) at Morphettville and her latest foal is a filly by So You Think (NZ).

Headwater (Exceed And Excel) will stand for a $13,200 (inc GST) service fee at Vinery, which is payable on live foal.  For bookings or further information, contact Adam White (0414 800 918) or Harry Roach (0401 970 006).
