Jordan Frew’s recent stable relocation at Murray Bridge was rewarded with three winners last week led by Headphones in the Spry Civil Construction Hcp (1400m) on Saturday.
A daughter of Vinery sire Headwater, she had won a Cranbourne maiden as an autumn 3yo for Mat Ellerton and Simon Zahra before crossing the border last year. “It’s her second prep for me and sitting off the fence worked perfectly,” Frew said. “She put the writing on the wall last start and coloured it in today.”
Headphones skipped away in the straight for her third home-town victory from Annihilate (I Am Invincible) and Private Jet (Good Journey). “She a homebred for Phil Bennett and he’s been a great supporter going back to when I rode his horses.”
One of the more memorable results from those days was in 2011 when Frew booted home Headphones’ dam Cybercyn (Staaraq) to a stunning 200/1 victory in the Colin Hayes Memorial Cup (LR, 1600m) at Morphettville.
“Jordie is on fire and I was confident the mare would come on again after her last run,” winning jockey Sam Payne said. “I stayed out in the middle of the track and it was a good win even though she did shy at the winning post!”
Headphones was one of 11 individual winners by Headwater in June and he’s in the mix for a Group 3 this Saturday when Mileva attempts back-to-back victories in the Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield.
Mileva, another 5yo daughter of Headwater, was last seen going down a length in the R N Irwin Stakes (Gr.3, 1100m) at Morphettville in April before changing hands for $700,000 at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale in May. She was sold as a broodmare prospect to Kia Ora Stud and trainer Phillip Stokes is hoping the new owners keep her in work for the remainder of the season.
“They’re saying one and done but I’m hoping to get one or two more out of her,” Stokes said on Monday. “I know the 1100m at Caulfield is ideal, it’s her pet distance and she’s shown us all the right signs.”
Mileva has won 7 of her 22 starts – 6 of them first-up – for prizemoney totalling $645,485. She made $42,000 as a yearling at the 2019 Adelaide Magic Millions for Little Hills Pastoral breeders Geoff and Christine Tucker.
