Vinery partner Steve McCann kicked off a winning treble on Saturday when Laelaps landed a shock $101 victory at Morphettville on Saturday.
McCann and Gerry Harvey bred Laelaps and sold her for $200,000 at the 2020 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale. Her residual value was worth that alone and she can continue making inroads on that price-tag according to trainer Patrick Ryan.
“I’ve only had her this prep and she’s been flying at home,” Ryan said as Harry Grace brought the mare back to scale. “She’s owned by Rob Salter and he rang from London this morning to see if she was worth a bet. I told him I can’t get her any better but it depends on the going.
“I walked the track and it was nowhere near as heavy as her last start at Hamilton. She disappointed that day but Harry said she was motoring until they were literally knee-deep in mud. He couldn’t have ridden her any better today and cut every corner to get her home.
“Getting that city win is a great result for Rob. He wants to breed from her and she’s by Tavistock from Allez Wonder who won a Group 1.”
Bart Cummings trained Allez Wonder (Redoute’s Choice) to win the 2009 Toorak Hcp (Gr.1, 1600m) at Caulfield. She was sold off the track for $1million before changing hands again for $750,000 at a 2014 Patinack Farm Dispersal.
Allez Wonder’s first seven foals to race have all won and the best of those bred by McCann and Harvey has been SAJC Breeders’ Stakes (Gr.3, 1200m) winner Kooweerup (More Than Ready). Her latest is a filly foal from the first crop of Vinery sire Ole Kirk.
McCann doubled up in Perth on Saturday with Honey Dew (Headwater) and Colossal (Snitzel).
Honey Dew won the Free Entry To Belmont Park Hcp (1200m) for a partnership that includes former West Coast Eagles footballers Peter Sumich and Brad Hardie. McCann bred her using Headwater over Tej (Bernardini) and sold her for $26,000 through the Vinery consignment at the 2020 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.
McCann bred Colossal in partnership with fellow Vinery partner Neil Werrett and the good-looking chestnut came from the clouds in the Morley Growers Market Hcp (1000m). They bought his dam Hallowell Belle (Starcraft) from Fremantle shipping service owner Craig Thompson after a career that included wins in the G2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) at Flemington and LR Darby Munro Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill.
Hallowell Belle has a yearling colt from the first crop of Vinery sire Exceedance and she was covered by Ole Kirk last October.
