Foreteller (Dansili – Prophecy by Warning) was bred by Juddmonte Farms and completed a 3yo hat-trick in the Prix De Suresnes (LR, 1800m) at Maisons-Laffitte before Chris Waller bought him for 100,000gns (AUD 171,400) at the 2010 Tattersalls Autumn Sale.
He was purchased on behalf of syndicate managed by Vinery partner Neil Werrett.
Foreteller was a $31 giant-killer claiming his first Group 1 in the 2013 Ranvet Stakes at Rosehill. With Jim Cassidy aboard, he came from the back-half of the field to win by a half-length while his heavily-supported stablemate Kelinni (Ire) finished midfield.
“He didn’t have conditions to suit last start in the Australian Cup,” Waller said. “That race was run at a breakneck speed and he was off the bridle trying to keep up at Flemington. He got the chance to be more composed today and it was a great ride by Jimmy.”
Foreteller caused another upset in the spring winning his second Group 1 at $16 in the Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington. He tracked Puissance de Lune every step of the way and then dived right on the line to deprive the Irish-import who was the reigning favourite for that year’s Melbourne Cup.
“Chris told me not to move until the latest possible moment,” winning jockey Craig Newitt said. “The grey horse kept finding but my bloke was too strong.”
Foreteller landed his third and final Group 1 after producing an exceptional turn of foot in the 2014 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield. “You have got to admire his courage,” Glen Boss declared after a perfectly-timed ride. “He just keeps fronting up and I’ve really enjoyed being part of his charisma.”
Foreteller will be greatly missed by those who worked with him and Vinery sends its condolences to his ownership group and thank them for entrusting him with us. He will be laid to rest at Vinery where he will be remembered not only as a great racehorse but as a great friend.
